The line break

One live meeting, one to one. The time is arranged with you. The same passage is broken in three places, read, and one is kept.

The break is not the period.

Ground

The break is not the period. It is a decision about where the eye stops, even if the sentence goes on.

Aim

  1. See the difference between the end of the sentence and the end of the line.
  2. Try three breaks of the same passage.
  3. Keep one, and be able to say what changed when you read it.

It trains

Decide where the eye stops.

Contents

1The break is not the period
1.1The sentence can go on

The line can break before the sentence ends.

1.2It is how it looks

In the method it is a decision about how the line looks, not about grammar.

1.3The edge

The reader stops there, even if the sentence has not finished.

2Three places
2.1When the sentence closes

The line rests. Sometimes that puts the verse out.

2.2In the middle

The sentence stays open and asks for the next line.

2.3On one word

A word alone on the edge has to be able to hold.

3Try it
3.1One passage

The same text, not three different poems.

3.2Read them

Aloud, you hear which break pulls and which goes out.

3.3Choose

You keep one and say what changed.

Questions

Does it work if I write without counting the lines?

Yes. The break does not depend on a meter. It depends on where the eye stops.

Is it a video?

No. It is live, one to one. The time is arranged by email.

What do I bring?

A short poem already written. If you do not have one, an example is used, and then yours.

What if I don't think of myself as a poet?

You don't have to. The work is a text of yours. A short draft is enough. If there is no poem, one sentence is enough.

It is live, one to one, on Zoom. The time is arranged by email.
