Workshop·Live, one to one·Two classes · two hours
Discourse markers

Two live meetings, one to one. The times are arranged with you. You learn to see the marker in a poem, to say what it does, and to try it: put it in, take it out, or move it. The marker is looked at inside the line.
A marker is not decoration. It marks the path.
Ground
A marker is not decoration. It tells the reader how to continue.
Aim
- Recognize a marker and place it: beginning, middle, or end.
- Say what it does in that line, and what sense it leaves.
- Try it on a text of your own: add, remove, or move.
It trains
See the word that shows the reader where to go.
Contents
1What it marks
1.1The path
The marker tells the reader how to continue. It does not decorate the sentence.
1.2Mark and marker
The mark is in the text. It becomes a marker when the reader uses it to interpret.
1.3Five to use
Organizer, connector, reformulator, operator, and conversational. Those families are enough to start.
2See it in the poem
2.1Identify
Read the passage, point to the marker, and the exact word that does it.
2.2Where it is
Beginning, middle, or end: of the line, the stanza, and the poem. Place changes the effect.
2.3What for
Its function, the benefit in that text, and the sense left for the reader.
3Try it
3.1Put it in or take it out
The same passage, with the marker and without it.
3.2Move it
Change its place inside the line, the stanza, or the poem.
3.3Convert it
A marker that becomes a line, or a line that starts to mark.
Questions
Do I need to know grammar?
No. A short list is used, and tried on a poem. The full catalogue is not required.
Is it a video?
No. Two live meetings, one to one. The times are arranged by email.
What text do I bring?
A short one of your own. If you do not have one, the first class looks at an example and the second tries yours.
What if I don't think of myself as a poet?
You don't have to. The work is a text of yours. A short draft is enough. If there is no poem, one sentence is enough.
It is live, one to one, on Zoom. The time is arranged by email.
